The BIG PILTON QUIZ – 10th May

The BIG PILTON QUIZ is into its fourth year and takes place in Pilton Hall on Saturday 10th May.  A sellout since 2011, the Big Pilton Quiz is for the wonderfully tactile ash wood question mark made by Mike Taffinder of North Buckland.  Winners so far have been:

  • 2011 – Brinded Cats
  • 2012 – The Professionals
  • 2013 – Glam DJ.

It comes with a light supper for only £5 and raises money to improve the Hall for community use.  Last year’s profit of £650 went towards more kitchen cupboards and pans and helped us – The Pilton Story – with equipment for our archive. Tickets will be available from early April.  Don’t miss them.

Conservative Annual Fete 100 years ago

Conservative Garden Party Tea Tent on Pilton Lawn around 1910-1914

About 100 years ago, the Barnstaple Conservative Association held its Annual Fete on Pilton Lawn in front of Pilton House. From the clothes in this photograph, the date appears to be Edwardian (up to 1910 when Edward VII died) or between 1910 and 1914, but we would be happy for any further suggestions on the precise date.  At the table on the left is May Pearce, daughter of Charles Pearce of Pilton House, who was born in 1893.

We have to thank Sue Pearce, Charles Pearce’s grand-daughter-in-law who was married to his grandson Arthur Richard Blackford Pearce and known as Dick, for this photograph.
