Three Hundred and Counting

Crows over St Mary's Church, Pilton

The Pilton Story Facebook Group – follow the link to find it – has just reached its 300th member.  It is great to see knowledge of the existence of The Pilton Story spreading further and, it seems to us, to a new generation.  We are starting to get things posted on Facebook or given to us by the children of long time Piltonians.  And, what’s more, we are nearly up to 400 items in the archive.  Please keep them coming.  Remember, history starts yesterday and we are keen on archiving the events of today which are the history of tomorrow.

Thanks to Al Brown for letting us use his brilliant black and white photograph of the church here and on the Facebook Group page.

The Circus Came to Town

The Circus Camel in Rolle Street in 1953

In 1953 a circus came to Barnstaple and paraded through the town to Pottington where the big top was set up.  Here a camel in the parade is seen walking along Rolle Street.  Gill Madge’s nan took the photo and her Dad (Colin Newcombe) and her Uncle Den were allowed to walk alongside all the way to Pottington.

Thanks to Colin Newcombe and Gill Madge for this photograph.
