Pilton Panto Time Again : Dick Whittington

Pilton Panto opens tomorrow, Wednesday 15th February, in Pilton Church Hall with this year’s show – Dick Whittington.  With a cast of over twenty of all ages from 9 upwards, the annual spectacular from Pilton Theatre Productions is on for five shows during the February Half Term.  It ends on the evening of Saturday 18th.  The Saturday matinee is already sold out as we write.   This photograph is a scene from the dress rehearsal.

Pilton Theatre Productions were formed in 2015 specifically to bring the Pilton Pantomime back after an absence of 3 years since the production of Cinderella in the Green Man in 2013.  The productions take place in Pilton Church Hall every February Half Term so they won’t clash with other users of the Hall like Pilton Pre-school and the Dance School.  In February 2016 they successfully produced Aladdin. bringing together a cast and crew with many old and new faces.  The panto revival was supported by Pilton Green Man Day with a loan to cover major costs including insurance, additional scenery, props, lighting and special effects.  There have also been welcome contributions towards this popular community event from Councillors Mair Manuel and Brian Greenslade.

Big Hole at the top of Pilton Street

In August 2016, an enormous hole was dug in front of the Upper Almshouses at the top of Pilton Street by the contractor charged by Western Power with replacing the electricity poles and overhead cables on The Rock.  This photograph shows just how many cables and pipes there can be under our old streets.  This is the oldest part of Pilton and dates to well before we first had water, gas, electric, telephone and sewerage services under our roads.  And in the background is the drilling rig brought in by the contractor to help create a deep enough hole in the very hard rock for the new electricity pole going in the wall of the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin.  You can see why it’s called The Rock!
