The attached newspaper cutting from the North Devon Gazette of 1985 concerns Mrs Olive Green of Abbey Road, Pilton, who had been diocesan correspondent for the Mothers Union for 48 years and wrote some 2,000 letters annually to UK and overseas ‘pen pals’.
Originally from Yelverton, near Plymouth, Mrs Green was married to that villages parson and when contacted by Meavy School in the village, engaged in letter writing to all pupils and the teachers. That correspondence started in 1981, but over the years Mrs Green had been writing, on behalf of the Mother Union, to children further afield requiring ‘special care’. Other groups have included those in Canada, Australia and the Seychelles.
Thanks to whoever left it with The Pilton Story. We would love to have the rest of Olive’s story to complete this item.
