The Green Man Pageant has been part of Pilton Festival, now known as Pilton Green Man Day, for at least three decades, starting in the centre of Pilton Street and then moving first to the garden of Pilton House and then into Rotary Gardens. It was the idea of the late Hamish Patrick who inspired so much of the story of the Green Man and Pilton.
When Pip Cartmell took over responsibility for the pageant, she became aware that many people, even after years of attending, were unsure of its story and significance, which had been only performed as a pageant to music up to then. She asked Wendy Clarke to write a narration to accompany the production. Wendy listened to the music and, based on the character of that and the mime sequences in the performance, wrote this story of the pageant and then recorded the voiceover with the help of Neil Rolfe.
Wendy’s professionalism and natural delivery brings the story to life and now provides the Pageant with a much needed narrative that audiences can easily follow and appreciate.
If you come to Pilton on the third Saturday in July each year, and are in Rotary Gardens at 12 noon or 3 pm, you can see the Green Man Pageant being performed by the cast of around 30 and listen to and understand the story.
